Philosophy class we talked what what is good and judging art. First we had to explain and define what art is. This proved to be extremely difficult because everyone had various definitions; each person had a very broad definition. Even more division came about when we were asked what we thought good art was; most critical of the classmates were people who were art majors or who had a real passion for art. Personally I am not an artist and never was, but art is extremely interesting. However, because I can’t draw anything to save my life, a lot of art I see is good because I am unable to draw, create, and or imagine such things. Going back to what makes art good, people gave all of these reasons like, the message is conveyed effectively or is the skill of the artist is shown. There is no standards for good and or bad because it is subjective to the person who is viewing it. The conversation can parlay over to other mediums like music, food, or movies.
After we watched a 60 Minutes piece on Thomas Kinkade. In case if you didn’t know who he is already, he is the artist who has sold the most paintings and what not. Just Google him and you will see something of his and have an “Aha” moment. He mostly draws cottages and lighthouses. While most people in the class loathed his art as “the most generic pieces of art ever” and they hated it because the art had no real message behind it. His art is soft and is art for “people who don’t understand real art” in some respects. I can’t help but seeing the music argument as a huge paralell.
The music argument that I have with people and whoever is this; pop music sucks because is formulaic, not original and is so boring. There is so much money and people behind it who don’t understand music, that real musicianship is lost in the boardrooms and contracts. This a huge reason why I listen to “Indie” music. If I mention a few bands on my iTunes and stuff most people will not know any of them; and I like it that way. I like being as unique as possible without being seen as a total whackjob. Going back to the paralell, Kinkade and his art, to me is like pop music, Lady GaGa and that hoopla, and “real” art, you know a few “real” artists. My music is the “real” art because, I believe, that with less money behind it that your music will be put out and not what the label, your audience and bank account tells you to put out. With this equation in place, I gravitate towards “indie” music because, it is entertaining, different, and real. Most people view it as not actual music because its not on the radio and the music they make sounds like a bunch of kids not actually playing their instruments.
However, Art and Music are very different while they are similar. Both are used as forms of self expression; but different because the artist use brushstrokes while the musician using the instrument of a guitar. I have a feeling that when talking about icons and legends of both, art and music, there is more of an argument within music than. Everyone loves Rembrant, Picasso, Van Gogh etc while in music everyone loves The Beatles but after that people get heated. Is it because art is older than contemporary music? Both are chock full of variety and there are different ages of music and art. Whatever is the case, there is more disagreement on the issue of music than of art.
This is another lesson in college that parallels over into other aspects of school and of life. Nothing like this would or could happen in high school curriculum or maybe I was not searching for such topics when I was in high school. College, and in and outside of the classroom, teaches more lessons that are appilicable in your everyday life than the life inside your binder. Is it becuase of the people you interact with or is it just that college is better than high school in every way? Whatever the reason may be, I am just happy to be a part of something that will help me grow as a person and help expand my mind.
If you’re a man and find yourself in an argument with your significant other, choose your words very carefully. In the heat of stressful conflict, your brain is commanding the release of a stress-chemical cocktail comprised of proteins that can deal major harm to your health. This study suggests that how rational or emotional your communication is directly corresponds with the levels of those chemicals in your body and the damage they can do.
Going back, on the idea of my last post, about hating hipsters and entry level alts; i have been listening to “indie” and or “bloghouse” music for a few years now. If there is one thing that I certainly have a disdain for is bandwagon jumpers; and from I can tell, most of these hipsters jumped on the bandwagon because they think its pretty freaking cool. I didn’t go get skinny jeans and shop and thrift stores to be the next blipster on the block but because the clothes are cheap and look great; plain and simple pimple.
Not gonna lie, I USED to be one big time; but nowadays i just stopped reading blogs for the most part and since being hip is just about the trendiest thing ever, I have grown tired of seeing kids transform themselves into hipsters. This deserves to be another post, so i will save it all for another post
hello, wanted to send this out to you guys in case you were into it, or wanted to give it to anyone who you think might be. a few friends and i are meditating at the same time twice a day. 9:30am and 6:30pm eastern standard time, for about an hour and half. we are picturing smashing apart all of the cancer cells in the world. we are visualizing taking the energy away from the cancer, and then sending it back at the cancer as lightening bolts that will break apart the DNA and RNA of the cells. if you have the time, please join us in whipping up this lightening storm. mind over matter…… if you prefer to sit then sit, but if you are not used to meditating, or sitting quietly doesn’t sound like fun, put on some music and dance while you do the visualization, and if you want to do it at some other time, or picture curing some other illness that’s fine too. yoko will be joining the meditation by visualizing all of us dancing with joy to celebrate the world without cancer. all variations are welcome. this is really just being done with a wish for all beings to be cured of all illnesses and to find true lasting happiness. i’ll also be saying prayers for the earthquake victims in tibet, so join in on that if you can too. please feel free to pass this onto anyone who you think may find it interesting. with all my love, adam yauch
Today was supposed to be the day; the day that finally the title race would be over. Even though Man U won today, in stoppage time against Man City, we (yes I say we) were supposed to win and basically lock up the title with a win today. I don’t care what anyone else is supposed to say about Chelsea, Man U, Spurs or anything else because I so pissed off that Chelsea, again, lost a crucial game that would lock up the title.
